Waiting for Phone Prices to Drop Before Christmas? Caribbean Resellers Shouldn't
If you sell phones in the Caribbean, you may be hoping prices ease before Christmas. The latest regional data says don't count on it. Memory chip costs are pushing handset prices up, and the forecast doesn't show relief this year. Here is how to plan a 30 unit order around that, with dates you can use today.
What Counterpoint reported for the second quarter of 2026
Counterpoint Research, as reprinted by MacTech, reported that Latin America smartphone shipments fell 10% year over year in Q2 2026, mainly because of the memory shortage. It was the largest annual drop since Q3 2023. Samsung grew 6% and holds 38% of regional shipments. Apple grew 5%. Counterpoint expects memory shortage and price pressure to continue through the second half of 2026, with signs of recovery starting in 2028.
Two cautions. These are Latin America numbers, not Caribbean ones, and we have no Caribbean split. A 10% drop in shipments also reads as a supply and cost story more than a demand collapse. Why waiting rarely pays when costs are rising
If prices were falling, waiting would make sense. When the forecast points the other way, every week you wait risks a higher quote on the same model. It also risks that the model you want is gone. A starting mix you can adjust: 12 entry level phones for gift buyers on a tight budget, 12 midrange phones for the shoppers who compare, and 6 premium phones for the customer who wants an iPhone or a Galaxy S. Change the split to match your counter. If your walk in customers rarely pay for premium, cut it to 3 and add midrange.

The 24 to 48 hour handoff and your December calendar

Today is October 27. Ask your forwarder for their last December departure date and count back from it. If you pay in early November, you have room to swap a model that sells out. If you pay in the second week of December, you have none. Payment is by wire transfer only, and the clock starts when the payment clears, not when you send it.
What to check before you pay
Ask for photos of the exact units on your quote. Confirm the grade on each line. New phones carry the manufacturer warranty, and Grade A+ and A refurbished phones carry a 60 day warranty from A1A. Write the model, storage and color you expect into your order notes so there is no confusion on delivery day.
Christmas buyers are not patient. A customer who walks in and finds your shelf empty buys somewhere else, and often doesn't come back in January. A modest order that lands in time is worth more than a big order that arrives after the rush. Plan the quote conversation this week. Send your target models, your budget per tier and the island you are shipping to, and ask which units are in stock now. In stock units are the ones covered by the 24 to 48 hour handoff, so they are the safest choice for a December deadline.
