Cayman Islands Phone Imports: Duty, CIF Math, and What a 30-Unit Order Really Costs

Customs inspection of wholesale phone shipment illustrating Cayman Islands import duty process

The Cayman Islands is a small market with unusual economics: no income tax, no sales tax, high purchasing power — and an import duty system that does all the government's heavy lifting at the border. If you resell phones in George Town, the duty line on your customs entry is the single biggest variable between a profitable lot and a break-even one. Here's how to budget it properly.

Cayman Duty: The 22%–27% Range and Where Phones Fit

Per PwC's Cayman Islands tax summary, import duty on most goods runs between 22% and 27%, and there is no VAT or sales tax on top of it. That's the general range — the actual rate for any item comes from the First Schedule to the Customs Tariff Act, and some categories carry reduced or zero rates.

Electronics have historically gotten favorable treatment in some categories, so don't assume the worst-case rate — but don't assume zero either. Before you price a shipment, confirm the current tariff code and rate for mobile phones directly with Cayman Islands Customs & Border Control, which publishes the tariff schedules and handles classification questions. A five-minute confirmation beats a 22% surprise.

    CIF Math: A Worked Example

Cayman assesses duty on CIF value — cost, insurance, and freight. That means your freight bill is dutiable too, which trips up first-time importers.

Here's an illustrative example (your numbers will differ — this is arithmetic, not a quote):

    • 30 units at $300/unit = $9,000 merchandise cost

    • Air freight Miami → Grand Cayman plus insurance = $400

    • CIF value = $9,400

    • Duty at an assumed 22% = $2,068

    • Landed cost = $11,468, or about $382 per unit

Two things jump out. First, duty added 27% to your per-unit cost versus the Miami price — so your retail pricing has to be built off the landed number, never the invoice number. Second, because freight is dutiable, every dollar you save on shipping saves you $1.22 all-in. Consolidating orders into fewer, larger shipments isn't just a freight optimization — it's a duty optimization.

No Sales Tax Changes How You Price

Here's the flip side that makes Cayman attractive: once your phones clear the border, that's the government's entire cut. No VAT to charge customers, no sales tax filings, no tax on your margin at the register. Your landed cost is your true cost, and the spread between it and your retail price is yours.

That's a real advantage over most Caribbean and Latin American markets, where resellers juggle border duties plus domestic VAT of 12–18%. It also means the reseller who does the CIF math correctly can quote sharper retail prices than the one who guesses and pads.

Getting Phones from Miami to Grand Cayman

The supply route for Cayman resellers is short and well-worn: buy in Miami, fly it south. At A1A Solutions we've served the island market for years from our Doral warehouse — our Cayman Islands wholesale phones page covers how we handle the route.

The mechanics: minimum order is 30 units (you can mix iPhone, Samsung, Motorola, Xiaomi and 40+ other brands in one order), payment by international wire, and we deliver FOB Miami to your freight forwarder at no charge. Every unit is factory unlocked, IMEI-verified, and hand-graded before it leaves. From wire confirmation to wheels-up is usually days, not weeks — browse the full catalog approach on our wholesale cell phones page, and our FAQ answers the common first-order questions.

    Budget Checklist Before You Wire

Run every Cayman order through four questions: What's the confirmed duty rate for phones this quarter? What's my full CIF value including freight and insurance? What's my true per-unit landed cost? And does my retail price hold margin at that landed cost? If all four answers are solid, the no-sales-tax structure makes Cayman one of the cleanest markets in the region to operate in.
