Flow Jamaica's 5G Is Live. Here's What It Means for the Phones You Stock

Flow switched on 5G in Jamaica on June 11, 2026, and by August it had opened the network to prepaid customers. If you resell phones in Kingston, Portmore or Montego Bay, that changes which handsets move and which ones sit on the shelf. Here is what Flow has said publicly, what it means for a 30 unit order, and what you should still confirm before you wire a dollar.
What Flow switched on, and where
At launch, Flow said its 5G reached about 70% of the population, covering Kingston, Portmore, Spanish Town, May Pen and the North Coast, with roughly 80% expected by the end of June, according to the Jamaica Observer. Postpaid plans started at J$2,700 plus tax, about US$20 before tax, and Flow sold 5G handsets on 24 month installment plans. Flow calls itself Jamaica's first commercial 5G operator, backed by a US$74 million investment from parent company Liberty Latin America. Digicel had not launched 5G commercially in Jamaica when Flow made its August announcement, per Developing Telecoms.
The scale of the build is worth noting. Flow's launch coverage cited more than US$50 million in network upgrades and US$24 million in spectrum, spread over roughly seven months. Operators don't spend that to stand still. Our expectation, and it is only an expectation, is that the 5G share of handset sales keeps climbing through the end of the year, so a reseller who waits for proof may be late.
The 21% number is the one to plan around
The most useful figure in the launch coverage is not the coverage map. It is that only 21% of Flow customers had both a 5G capable phone and an updated SIM card. That number is from launch in June, so treat it as a starting point and not today's reading. Still, it tells you where the demand sits. Coverage got ahead of handsets, and about four in five customers did not yet have both pieces. Each of those customers is a possible sale for a reseller with the right stock.
Prepaid opened on August 10, and that changes your entry tier
On August 10, Flow extended 5G to prepaid customers on the 7 day plan and above. If your shop serves mostly prepaid buyers, this matters more than the postpaid launch did. A prepaid customer is not signing a 24 month installment plan. They pay cash for the handset, and the price gap between a 4G phone and a 5G phone decides what they walk out with. That makes the entry 5G tier the one to watch. Memory chip costs have pushed budget phone prices up this year, which we covered in our memory shortage order mix post, so expect entry level prices to stay under pressure.
A 30 unit order for Jamaica, built around 5G
This is our suggestion, not a forecast. Don't swing the whole order to 5G overnight. Flow's coverage is wide, but a customer outside the main towns may still sit on 4G, and a 4G phone works fine there. A starting split could be 10 entry level 5G Android phones for prepaid buyers, 8 mid range 5G Android phones, 6 recent iPhones (every iPhone from the iPhone 12 onward supports 5G), and 6 solid 4G models for buyers who only want the lowest price. Review it after two weeks of sell through. If the 5G units move faster, shift the next order further that way.
Check type approval and band support before you check specs
A 5G label on the box is not the whole story. Before you stock a model you haven't sold in Jamaica, confirm it supports the 5G bands Flow actually uses and that it carries the approval Jamaican customs expects. The Spectrum Management Authority requires type approval for wireless devices, and we walked through the check in our Jamaica SMA type approval guide. The older bands still matter too, because customers outside 5G coverage fall back to 4G. Our Digicel and Flow compatibility guide covers that side. Ask your supplier for the band list of each model in writing, not just the marketing name.
