Building a 30 Unit First Order When Memory Costs Squeeze Budget Phones

Global distribution map for planning a 30 unit wholesale phone order in Latin America

Latin American smartphone shipments fell 10% year on year in the second quarter of 2026, according to Counterpoint Research. That's the biggest drop since the third quarter of 2023. If you're placing a first wholesale order right now, the market data should change how you split your 30 units.

    Where the drop landed

Counterpoint says entry level and mid range devices make up about 75% of regional sales, and those are the phones that took the hit. Memory costs pushed component prices up, and cheap phones have the least room to absorb it. Brands concentrated in that tier lost the most: Xiaomi shipments fell 27%, Motorola 14% and Honor 8%. You can read the numbers in Developing Telecoms' coverage of the report.

Demand also weakened on the consumer side. Counterpoint points to economic pressure in Colombia, Mexico and Brazil, and to election uncertainty.

    Who is still growing

Samsung grew 6% and holds a 38% share of regional shipments, per Counterpoint's Market Monitor report as summarized by MacTech. Apple grew 5% and holds roughly 51% of phones priced above $600. Counterpoint says Apple is absorbing higher costs to limit price increases. Those two were the only key brands to grow.

What that means for a 30 unit order

A minimum order isn't a bet on the whole market. It's a test of your own customers. With demand shifting toward brands that hold their price, we'd steer a first order away from a single budget brand and toward a mix. Put the bulk of the units in the models your buyers already ask you for. Then use a small slice to test one price tier above or below.

Here's a simple frame. About half the order goes to your proven sellers. About a third goes to a second brand that covers a different price point. The rest goes to one test model. Treat those ratios as a starting point, not a rule. Your local market decides.

Write the split down before you order. When the shipment lands, compare what sold against the plan. That comparison is the real return on your first order, and it tells you exactly what to change on the second one.

Why fewer models beat more models

With 30 units, five different models means six units each. That's too thin to learn anything, and too thin to fill a customer's larger request. Two or three models give you enough depth to sell repeat orders. Fewer models also mean fewer IMEI lists to verify, fewer customs line items, and simpler pricing for your sales team.

Ask about refurbished units in the same brands

If budgets are tight, ask about Grade A refurbished units in brands you already sell. A lower cost per unit can let you stock more depth in a proven model. Check the grade definitions first so you know exactly what you're getting, and compare them against new units before you decide.

Three questions to ask any supplier this quarter

Ask three questions before you wire money: what grade and condition each unit is, what the current per unit price is and how long it's held, and what the return process looks like for dead on arrival units. A supplier who answers all three in writing is worth keeping.

Watch the outlook before you reorder

Counterpoint expects memory shortages and price pressure to continue through the second half of 2026, and says memory supply and pricing, not consumer demand, will drive market performance over the next 18 to 24 months. In practice, wholesale prices can move between your first order and your second. Keep your reorder cycle short at first, and ask for a current price list each time instead of reusing an old one.

    What we can't predict

We can't tell you where prices will be in December, and nobody else can either. What we can do is help you build an order that still works if they move: proven models first, a small test slice, and a short reorder cycle.
